چکیده

We consider the screening of a magnetic impurity in a dx2−y2 wave superconductor. The properties of the dx2−y2 state lead to an unusual behavior in the impurity magnetic susceptibility, the impurity specific heat and in the quasiparticle phase shift which can be used to diagnose the nature of the condensed state. We construct an effective theory for this problem and show that it is equivalent to a multichannel (one per node) non-marginal Kondo problem with linear density of states and coupling constant J . There is a quantum phase transition from an unscreened impurity state to an overscreened Kondo state at a critical value Jc which varies with ∆0, the superconducting gap away from the nodes. In the overscreened phase, the impurity Fermi level ǫf and the amplitude ∆ of the ground state singlet vanish at Jc like ∆0 exp(−const. /∆) and J − Jc respectively. We derive the scaling laws for the susceptibility and specific heat in the overscreened phase at low fields and temperatures. PACS numbers: 71.27.+a,75.20.Hr Typeset using REVTEX 1

Zn and Ni impurities in the hole-doped high-temperature superconductors are known to have strong effects on thermodynamic and transport properties. A recent scanning tunneling microscope study of Zn-doped Bi2212 (Pan et al., Nature 403, 746 (2000)) has provided high-resolution images of the local density of states around non-magnetic impurities in dx2−y2-wave superconductors. These pictures con...

Gap renormalization in dirty anisotropic superconductors: Implications for the order parameter of the cuprates.

We contrast the effects of non-magnetic impurities on the properties of superconductors having a dx2−y2 order parameter, and a highly anisotropic s-wave (ASW) gap with the same nodal structure. The non-vanishing, impurity induced, offdiagonal self-energy in the ASW state is shown to gap out the low energy excitations present in the clean system, leading to a qualitatively different impurity res...

Tunneling spectra for (dx2−y2 + is)-wave superconductors versus tunneling spectra for (dx2−y2 + idxy)-wave superconductors

The tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / singlet superconductor is calculated from the reflection amplitudes using the BlonderTinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. The pairing symmetry of the superconductor is assumed to be dx2−y2 + is, or dx2−y2 + idxy. It is found that in the (dx2−y2 + is)-wave case there is a well defined conductance peak in the conductance spectra, in...

Thermodynamic Properties of D X 2 −y 2 + Id Xy Superconductor

In view of the current interest in dx2−y2 + idxy superconductors some of their thermodynamic properties have been studied to obtain relevant information for experimental verification. The temperature dependence of the specific heat and superfluid density show marked differences in dx2−y2 + idxy state compared to the pure d-wave state. A second order phase transition is observed on lowering the ...

Localized anisotropic superconductors

We address the question of whether an anisotropic gap of dx2−y2 symmetry is compatible with localized states in the normal phase. The issue is important for high-Tc superconductors for which a superconductor-to-insulator transition is observed, together with a number of experiments that support d-wave pairing. We prove that d-wave superconductivity is compatible with a localized normal state. W...
